Rediscovering Identity Through Design History
At General Condition Studio, our design journey started with a deep admiration for mid-20th-century graphic design. Early in the process, we combined 18th-century art references with modernist visuals from the 21st century. This unusual blend shaped our very first visual identity, which later earned recognition and several design awards. To dive deeper, you can explore our Elementor Hall of Fame feature or revisit key moments in modernist design history.
From Conceptual Brochure to Strategic Platform
Our original website looked more like a conceptual brochure than a typical studio homepage. Dark backgrounds, curated type, and strong editorial sensibilities defined the tone. However, by 2024, our tenth anniversary, we realized it was time to evolve. We needed a cohesive design system that could reflect our story, values, and future direction.
Creative Growth Takes Time
As every creative knows, growth rarely follows a straight line. Over the years, weโve faced doubt, criticism, and imposter syndrome. These moments didnโt stop us. Instead, they helped shape our resilience. Submitting our site for Elementorโs Best Website of the Year was a turning point. We understood that creative recognition rarely comes from waiting; it arrives when you act, even before you feel ready.
Inspiration from the Past, Built for the Future
Our rebrand in 2023 drew heavily from 1960s to 1980s visual culture. We looked closely at vintage schoolbooks, poster design, and childrenโs publications. One source stood out: Poletarac, a large-format magazine published in Belgrade from 1973 to 1975.
Produced by the renowned Borba newspaper house and curated by the writer Duลกan Radoviฤ, Poletarac brought together legendary names like Dragan Lukiฤ, Milovan Danojliฤ, Dobrica Eriฤ, Ljubivoje Rลกumoviฤ, Radoslav Zeฤeviฤ, and Duลกan Petriฤiฤ. Although it ran for just 19 issues, its 1,600+ pages left a lasting impression. The mix of poetic writing, graphic playfulness, and cultural experimentation became embedded in our visual memory.
Today, that influence can be felt in our use of typography, motion design, and emotional storytelling. Rather than simply referencing the past, we reinterpreted it, building a new identity grounded in history but alive in the present.
The Result: More Than Just a Website
The redesigned General Condition Studio brand is not just a visual facelift. Itโs a living system, a curated online experience shaped by feeling, structure, and identity. It captures ten years of creative work and connects everything: vision, voice, and soul.
