Savaball: Celebrating Serbian Culture in Vienna Since 1846

Savaball: A Cultural Legacy in Motion

Savaball is one of the most prestigious Serbian cultural gatherings in Vienna. As a key part of the city’s famous winter ball season, it celebrates more than just tradition. The event highlights the ongoing cultural exchange between Serbia and Austria through music, dance, and design.

A Royal Request That Started It All

The roots of Savaball stretch back to the 19th century. When Vienna’s Johann Strauss Society reached out to the Serbian community for help in publishing Strauss’s collected works, one piece stood out. The Serbian Quadrille, a composition that had once been commissioned by Prince Miloš Obrenović, became a symbol of this historical connection.

Since 1842, Prince Miloš had lived in Vienna and often attended its grand balls. In an effort to strengthen Serbia’s cultural presence, he asked Johann Strauss II to compose a piece for the Slavonic Ball. That 1846 gathering brought together Serbian artists and intellectuals like Vuk Karadžić and Branko Radičević, along with Austrian nobles and diplomats.

Where Music and Movement Meet

At that first event, the debut of the Serbian Quadrille marked an important moment for both nations. The atmosphere was shaped by waltzes, polkas, and Serbian piano compositions from the 19th century. These sounds brought a regional nuance to an otherwise Viennese tradition.

To reflect this rich blend of influences, the visual identity for Savaball takes inspiration from fluid motion. The logo, based on the curves of the River Danube, mirrors the grace of ballroom dance. It also symbolizes the flow of culture between Belgrade and Vienna.

Honoring the Past While Looking Forward

Color plays an essential role in reinforcing this identity. Deep blues and golden yellows dominate the visual system. These shades evoke the elegance of chandeliers, polished floors, and historical salons, while also referencing the tones of Strauss’s music.

Rather than imitating tradition, Savaball reinterprets it. From its logo to its musical programming, every detail is part of a larger story. The goal is not to recreate the past but to celebrate continuity, connection, and cultural evolution.

A Contemporary Take on a Historic Event

Today, Savaball continues to unite Serbian and Austrian communities through shared values and artistic expression. The identity reflects a timeless elegance with a contemporary edge. Each element—from the music to the website—has been crafted to embody grace, depth, and meaning.
